In the FutureLearn online course offered by the University of Cape Town called “Medicine and the Arts: Humanising Healthcare”, I discovered how the arts can enhance patient outcomes and healthcare delivery. I was able to develop a deeper understanding of the ways that the arts may support conventional healthcare approaches by attending to the psychological and emotional needs of the patients. The notion that the arts could contribute to empathy, understanding, and communication between patients and medical personnel particularly grabbed my attention. Additionally, I also gained knowledge on the development of the arts and medicine throughout the history of humanity, and how they have influenced one another.
This course was interesting, thought-provoking, and enlightening all around. I especially enjoyed the chance to learn from a diverse range of perspectives, and the films, articles, and interactive activities were all extremely well-constructed and informative. Even as a high school student with not much expertise in health and the arts, I personally found the course to be approachable and easy to follow. I valued the eagerness of the lecturers to share their knowledge and respond to the inquiries of the students, since they were engaging and knowledgeable.
On a final note, I would highly recommend this online course to anyone interested in the intersection between medicine and the arts, two completely different fields of study. This course provides a unique and valuable perspective on the ways in which these two fields can work together collaboratively to improve healthcare outcomes and enhance patient care. Whoever you are, whether you are a student, a healthcare professional, an artist, or simply someone interested in learning more about this fascinating topic, I believe that anyone would find this online course to be captivating, stimulating, and intriguing.
